Martins Corentin: Mauritania failed to show up

Speaking after his side’s 3-1 loss at the hands of Mali in a Last 16 match at the 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations on Monday, September 11, Mauritania coach Martins Corentin admits his side failed to show up.

The Mauritanian defence went to sleep in the dying minutes of the game and allowed Moussa Kone to score two goals in the space of three minutes to hand Mali the victory at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium.

Corentin admits the loss is a bitter pill to swallow, especially when he saw his Mauritanian side beat Mali 1-0 three weeks ago in a CAF African Nations Championship qualifier in Bamako.

“The truth is, we didn’t play well, but we will learn a lot of lessons from our loss to Mali,” said Corentin.

“We all know Mali is not a small team and you need to be 150% fit to beat, and that is exactly what we did in Bamako in the CHAN qualifiers three weeks ago, but clearly we didn’t show up today.”
