Day one of the 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations produced many nail biting moments and some close calls as two African giants in Ghana and Senegal managed to avoid elimination.
In the day’s first game at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on Saturday, September 9 it took a 99th minute penalty from Vincent Adaeh Antigah to hand the Black Stars a 1-0 win over Gambia.
It was not the most impressive performance from the African powerhouse, but Maxwell Komadu will be delighted in his troops and their never say die attitude which saw them run out victorious in a tough match.
The second match of the day produced no goals in a thrilling affair which ended 0-0 between Senegal and Liberia.
Both countries looked threatening in attack, but neither could produce the goods in front of goal to secure victory.
In the end it was a nerve wracking penalty shoot-out which saw Senegal down Liberia 5-4.
Day two of the 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations will see Burkina Faso taking on Niger at 15h00 (GMT) and Guinea playing Guinea-Bissau at 18h00 (GMT), with both matches taking place at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on Sunday, September 10.
