Known by the nickname ‘Les Mourabitones’, Mauritania will be making their WAFU Nations Cup debut in Ghana 2017.
They were regular participants in the regional Amilcar Cabral Cup (a tournament which has effectively been replaced by the WAFU event) and even finished as runners-up in the 1995 edition.
Their only major tournament appearance was in the 2014 African Nations Championship in South Africa, where they finished bottom of their group after losses to DR Congo, Burundi and Gabon.
Listed 86th on FIFA’s official world rankings, Les Mourabitones will renew hostilities with Mali in the 2017 WAFU Nations Cup - the same team that they faced in the final round of qualifiers for the 2018 CHAN. Mauritania have also claimed notable friendly wins over Congo and Senegal through the course of 2017.
