Senegal

Known by the nickname ‘Teranga Lions’, Senegal will be making their fourth appearance at the WAFU Nations Cup.

They were part of the eight-team field at the cancelled inaugural tournament in Ivory Coast, finished as runners-up to hosts Nigeria in the 2010 competition, withdrew from the 2011 event, and in 2013 they were again beaten by the tournament hosts (Ghana on this occasion) in the final.

This year Senegal will face Liberia in the opening knockout round and look to advance into the group stage alongside the region’s heavyweights.

Listed 31st on FIFA’s official world rankings (the highest of any WAFU 2017 competitor), the Teranga Lions’ locally-based side was given a tough working over by Guinea in the teams’ two-legged qualifying tie for the 2018 African Nations Championship.
